On November 21, 2013, the Euromaidan protests began in Ukraine with supporters of European integration who were unhappy that the authorities had suspended preparations for the signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU. The protests lasted for months and took place in the center of Kiev and other Ukrainian cities. The protests eventually turned violent and ended in a coup when protesters seized the government district on February 22, 2014, leading to the ouster of then-President Viktor Yanukovich.
